Australia: CONSUMER LEVY BACKED BY MINISTER

Australia’s agriculture and water resources minister David Littleproud has endorsed proposals for a temporary 10c/litre milk levy payable by consumers at retail level to support farmers and give the industry time to reach consensus on structural reform. He said the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission’s report recommending a mandatory code of conduct for the dairy industry had identified “market failure” yet the industry had failed to respond to his request for a united position in response to the report.
